Overview

The Assistant Teacher I will support the teachers who serve a varied population of students in the Kennedy Krieger Schools. The incumbent assists with the implementation of the program as outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) of each student and with adapting instruction that meets the individual academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs of the students.

We want to enable students to reach their potential in all aspects of life – academically, socially and behaviorally – and help lead them toward the ultimate goal of nurturing their independence now and in the future.

 

Our curriculum focuses on building essential skills based on standards and curricula identified by the Maryland State Department of Education. Students receive ongoing instruction in reading/English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, health, music, fine arts and career development.

 

We are a nonpublic special education day program approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. We operate on an 11-month program schedule.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist with the implementation of instruction in accordance with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), in cooperation with the Special Education Teacher and using effective strategies for academic and behavioral success.
  2. Complete instructional-related duties as assigned by the Special Education Teacher and administrators.
  3. Provide instruction, oversight, and classroom management under the direction of the Special Education Teacher.
  4. Implement behavioral protocols and assignments for students during instructional and non-instructional times.
  5. Utilize instructional and non-instructional times in a professional manner in keeping with administrative guidelines.
  6. Participate in and contribute to in-service training and staff meetings.
  7. Provide support and leadership for curricular and extra-curricular activities that support student-life and promote a positive school experience.
  8. Assist with the implementation of technology in instructional design and delivery in accordance with supervising teacher’s directions.
  9. Assist with the implementation of instruction in relation to Maryland Core Learning Goals, Skills for Success, Content Standards, and specific Industry Standards.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional Crisis Management (PCM) training will be provided by the department. The employee must achieve and maintain certification according to the timeline established by the department.
  • May be required to achieve, possess, and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and First Aide certification. The department will provide a limited amount of certification opportunities and employee may obtain and provide documented evidence of required certification from an external provider.

 

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree in education, special education, or related area preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Previous experience working in a classroom of students with disabilities is preferred.

 

Minimum pay range

USD $17.85/Hr.

Maximum pay range

USD $24.95/Hr.
