The Neurobehavioral Unit (NBU) is a unique, 16- bed unit dedicated to the assessment and treatment of children and young adults with severe, treatment-resistant behavioral disorders. The NBU serves patients with a variety of diagnoses, including: autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, intellectual disability, sleep disorders, seizure disorders, feeding disorders, stereotypic movement disorder with self-injurious behavior, and various genetic, metabolic and chromosomal disorders. The NBU has served patients from across the country and around the world, offering a specialized integrated and targeted application of behavioral and pharmacological interventions.

 

The Dietary Technician (NBU) is an integral part of the Neurobehavioral Unit (NBU) and the nutrition care team, and takes a pivotal role in acting as a liaison between Kennedy Krieger Institute and the food service vendor/contractor.

 

This position is 35 hours per week working Monday through Friday from 7:30a-2:30p with some weekend requirements.

Responsibilities

  • · Ensure that all patients requiring meal trays have an age/skill appropriate daily menu that is nutritionally complete and is entered into the electronic diet order system based on diet order from Epic. Adhere to food service vendor or contractor deadlines for meal orders. Update NBU diet log/meal chart in pantry.
  • · In coordination with the Unit Clerk, monitor par stock and order bulk/individual snack supplies through the appropriate online ordering system. Monitor and receive formula requests and supplies. Maintain paperwork for food service vendor/contractor, the NBU, and the Nutrition department’s files.
  • · Complete nutrition information gathering for all patients on the NBU.
  • · Educate and provide information to patients and their families to assist them in completing menus and making decisions concerning nutrition and diet choices.
  • · Interact with NBU Medical, Nursing, and/or Psychology staff as needed to meet the nutritional needs of patients
  • · Adhere to all food safety and pantry guidelines to maintain a safe and clean environment for meal delivery.
  • · Store foods per protocol (i.e., first in, first out) and maintain proper expiration dates. Properly store, label, and date food brought in from outside. Maintain temperature logs for patient refrigerator, freezer, and sanitizer. Ensure proper operation of all appliances.
  • · Conduct and oversee meal prep, to include cutting up of food, adding appropriate utensils and beverages, and checking tray for accuracy and compliance with diet order/food allergies. Clean and sanitize all silverware.
  • · Educate and train select NBU staff to assist with meal preparation and pantry guidelines to ensure food safety.
  • · Participate in performance improvement data collection and evaluation.
  • · Attend in-service opportunities to maintain updated knowledge of the food service tray line/snack/supplies and menu services that must be accessed by Kennedy Krieger Institute personnel.
  • · Liaise with the food service vendor/contractor and Kennedy Krieger Institute staff for daily matters.
  • · Supervises affiliating students as assigned, including the delegation of assignments and workload.

 

Qualifications

  • · Must possess and maintain status as Dietetic Technician—Registered (DT-R) from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). A Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from an ASCEND-accredited program at a U.S. regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for this requirement.
  • · Must possess and maintain ServSafe Food Handler Certification.
  • · Associate’s degree, or equivalent college credits, from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university required.
  • · General experience/exposure to clinical food service management and nutritional care required.

Minimum pay range

USD $16.15/Hr.

Maximum pay range

USD $25.68/Hr.
