Overview

The Assistive Technology Specialist’s primary function entails providing direct and consultative services to staff, parents and students.  The Assistive Technology Specialist trials, evaluates, and recommends assistive software and hardware purchases, keeps abreast of current trends in assistive technology and trains staff, parents and students in the use of assistive technology devices, on-line resources, and adaptive strategies.  This position works directly with teaching staff to incorporate the use of assistive technologies in the classroom as well as facilitate the integration of assistive technologies into the curriculum.  The Assistive Technology Specialist acts as a liaison with the Department of Assistive Technology at Kennedy Krieger Institute, local school systems, technology vendors, and other referring agencies.

 

This position can be a stand alone part-time position or a joint position for full-time with SLP at LEAP School.

Responsibilities

  1. Oversees and provides leadership and professional knowledge for all school personnel regarding Assistive Technology hardware and software.
  2. Oversees the selection of school-owned assistive technology items, reviews requisitions for their purchase, and exercises authority to approve, amend, or reject purchases based on compatibility with schools goals and needs.
  3. Works collaboratively with teachers, parents, and other IEP team members to ensure appropriate selection and implementation of assistive technologies.
  4. Keeps documentation and inventory of all hardware, software, and assistive technology items.
  5. Provides direct and consultative services to students, staff and families as indicated on the student’s IEP. Maintains up-to-date contacts, documentation and progress notes on students with AT requirements.
  6. Attends professional development activities and trainings as required to maintain professional knowledge. Maintains contemporary knowledge of assistive technology resources and recommends those that can be used for specific students.
  7. Assists in the integration and adaptation of software, on-line resources, and assistive technology use into the classroom
  8. Completes evaluations in conjunction with local school systems’ assistive technology teams and reports those evaluations to the IEP team.
  9. Attends annual IEP meetings for students who require AT services.
  10. Coordinates visits from Kennedy Krieger Institute personnel and LSS teams with staff and students.
  11. Coordinates replacement and repair of Assistive Technology equipment used at the Kennedy Krieger School Programs.

Qualifications

  • *Individual must demonstrate competence across all age groups due to the diversity of the children and families served by KKI.
  • *Clinical care focus is on the neonate, pediatric, and adolescent populations, as well as some adults with disabilities.

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Speech Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy or related subject area is required. 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working directly with students in a Special Education environment is required, including extensive experience implementing various assistive technologies.

RELATED TRAINING:

  • PCM training will be provided by department.  Employee must achieve and maintain certification at the “Practitioner” level (or higher) according to the timeline established within the departmental policy.

Minimum pay range

USD $27.00/Hr.

Maximum pay range

USD $46.92/Hr.
