Overview

The Neurobehavioral Unit (NBU) is a unique, 16- bed unit dedicated to the assessment and treatment of children and young adults with severe, treatment-resistant behavioral disorders. The NBU serves patients with a variety of diagnoses, including: autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, intellectual disability, sleep disorders, seizure disorders, feeding disorders, stereotypic movement disorder with self-injurious behavior, and various genetic, metabolic and chromosomal disorders. The NBU has served patients from across the country and around the world, offering a specialized integrated and targeted application of behavioral and pharmacological interventions.

 

This position is 24 hours per week, two 12 hour shifts, Day (7:00am-7:30pm)/Late Day (11:00am-11:30pm) or three 8 hours shifts, Day (7:00am-3:30pm)/ Late Day (11:00am-7:30pm)/Evening (3:00pm-11:30pm)

Responsibilities

1. Under the direction of the licensed nurse, and at the beginning of every shift, reviews the electronic medical records and behavioral and educational protocols for assigned patients.

2. With the licensed nurse, prioritizes work schedules to accommodate the needs of assigned patients and the efficient functioning of the unit.

3. Provides direct patient physical care, including patients’ vital signs and implementation of behavioral protocols consistent with the patients’ levels of adaptive skills.

4. Follow unit safety procedures using safe handling techniques and approved physical management procedures (including patient transport and blocking for both self-injurious and staff-directed aggressive behavior from patients), and ensure the safety of surroundings.

5. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.

6. Prepares and transports patients for scheduled appointments and remains with patients when required.

7. Assumes responsibility for cleanliness, neatness, and organization of the patients’ environments and helps maintain a safe patient environment.

8. Documents in the electronic medical records with clear, concise, and accurate data regarding patients’ conditions, issues, etc.

9. Identifies and reports problems and concerns to the licensed nurse regarding patient behavioral and educational protocols including any changes in patients’ physical/emotional health.

10. Collects, labels, and transports laboratory specimens and other requested items to appropriate areas as assigned.

11. Actively participates in Nursing Department activities including in-services to improve the work environment.

Qualifications

  • · High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • · Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the State of Maryland required
  • · Current Heartsaver or Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification required.
  • · Experience with pediatric and/or developmental disabled population preferred.
