Overview

The Research Assistant II provide research support, perform laboratory procedures, and maintain documentation/records related to research in department. The incumbent will maintain a good working knowledge of study protocols and adhere to all protocol requirements, onboard students to the lab, and perform statistical analyses to create reports and data visualizations.

Responsibilities

1. Provide care to wild-type mouse colony maintenance, to include mouse weaning, changing animal cage during first 3 postnatal weeks (while sexing the mice), maintaining mouse inventory logs, weighing laboratory animals, and documentation of weights with each weaning.
2. Ensure running wheel cages are always assembled and maintain running wheel apparatus and software.
3. Performs routine laboratory procedures under general supervision, such as reagent preparation, mouse perfusions and dissections, tissue processing and cutting, immunohistochemistry slide preparation and analysis, RT-qPCR, and microscopic analysis on samples obtained from experimental studies.
4. Maintains clear, accurate, and explicit records of all procedures and experiments performed in lab notebook. Maintains accurate animal colony records in Mouse Inventory Log.
5. Assumes primary responsibility for managing all aspects of assigned research project, including troubleshooting and maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatuses.
6. Performs statistical analyses and prepares basic charts, graphs, and other data visualizations.
7. Assists in writing papers for publication based on data obtained.
8. Onboards students in lab with basic lab tour and ensuring all trainings complete and recorded. Provides new personnel with education on emergency procedures, phone numbers, and online safety trainings.
9. Maintains inventory of lab supplies, to include ordering lab supplies when necessary and recording the status of the order, grant account, and date of receipt. For larger pieces of equipment, writes received date on packing slip and files appropriately. Maintains log of lab purchases.
10. Maintains a clean environment, to include washing/autoclaving bottles, test tubes, utensils, reusable equipment; ensuring dishes are not left in the sink overnight unless soaking to clean; and ensuring lab is mopped and cleaned between experiments.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree required.


EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience working with rodents preferred.
