the Clinical Laboratory Technician IV will perform a variety of laboratory procedures including diagnostic tests for the identification of patients with inherited metabolic disorders according to precise procedures in the laboratory manual, as well as experimental procedures for the purposes of research as directed by the laboratory management.  In addition, the clinical laboratory technician IV will independently maintain instrumentation, assist with quality control procedures, organize proficiency testing, perform data analysis, and supervise general laboratory operations.


  1. Perform quality control and quality management procedures and maintain related instrument and testing logbooks as required by state and federal laboratory licensing agencies.
  2. Organize and participate in laboratory proficiency testing. Maintain proficiency test records for review by the laboratory director.
  3. Assist the laboratory director in preparation and maintenance of requirements for state and federal laboratory licensing agencies and other laboratory listings and funding agencies such as GeneTests and the State of Maryland Health Services.
  4. Monitor and assess activities of the laboratory administrative assistant, including MSLWIN data entry, faxing of patient reports, generation of test invoices, laboratory billing, and KKI Workspace. Perform administrative duties in the absence of the administrative assistant.
  5. Perform data analysis of organic acids, amino acids, sterols, lipids and other metabolites as needed. This includes evaluating results from chromatographic analyses, calibrate if required, and transfer of results to Excel spreadsheets for editing and production of final reports.
  6. Develop new temperature programs and test new capillary columns in order to separate all analyses of interest.
  7. Assist in the development and standardization of new analytical methods as well as prepare analytical standards and quality control materials as necessary.
  8. Perform quantitative extraction, purification, derivatization, and analysis of organic acids, amino acids, sterols, lipids, and other metabolites from human fluids, tissues, or cultured cells according to established laboratory procedures as needed.
  9. Utilize and maintain the laboratory's gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers, and amino acid analyzers according to the manufacturer's or laboratory's specific procedures. Utilize, share, and maintain other standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, balances, sonicators, ovens, evaporators, and incubators. Maintain records for laboratory equipment
  10. Attend laboratory seminars, meetings, and additional training classes or seminars pertinent to the safe and accurate performance of duties in the laboratory. Undertake education or training as needed to learn or upgrade skills for new laboratory equipment, procedures, and specific job responsibilities. Attend selected national and international scientific meetings as needed for updating knowledge of metabolic disorders and their diagnosis
  11. Follow established department policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. Keep updated in safety procedures for the handling, storage and disposal of biohazards, infectious, radioactive, and toxic substances, ensuring that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with such procedures.
  12. Work as a team member to share in laboratory workload, maintenance of equipment, clean work area and consumable supply needs.



  • Bachelor’s of Science or Arts degree required.
  • Coursework in chemistry, mathematics, and biology preferred.
  • Certified Medical Technician may be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.



  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory or medical technician position in a high complexity diagnostic laboratory preferred.
  • Master’s of Science degree may be considered in lieu of lab experience.
