The Child Life Specialist is responsible for the supervision of patients and siblings while in the outpatient playroom.  The Child Life Specialist plans and implements social and/or recreational programs which support the development, psychosocial and cultural needs of the patients and siblings.  The Child Life Specialist utilizes a family centered care approach in assuring the psychosocial needs of the patient and caregivers are met by providing education on medical procedures and conditions, offering emotional support and creating opportunities for normal growth and development.


  1. Supervises patients and siblings in the outpatient playroom.
  2. Plans and facilitates activities and interventions in group and individual settings to help patients and caregivers cope with medical situations and meet their developmental, emotional and cultural needs.
  3. Observes and assesses patients, siblings and caregiver/patient interactions and provides information when appropriate to clinicians.
  4. Models developmentally appropriate interactions for patients, caregivers and staff.
  5. Facilitates the orientation, adjustment, and ongoing support of patients and caregivers to the health care experiences, illness or disability and advocates for them within the medical environment.
  6. Provides medical procedure preparation, support, and accompaniment whenever necessary to support the patient and/or caregivers.
  7. Communicates and documents patient and caregiver interventions as appropriate.
  8. Maintains a safe, therapeutic milieu in all patient areas and sustains appropriate professional boundaries with patients, caregivers and staff.
  9. Provides supervision for child life students and volunteers.
  10. Interprets the mission, goals and philosophical base of the department, professional group, and/or Institute whenever necessary.
  11. Maintains quality and effectiveness of patient services through implementation of and compliance with all departmental and/or Institute policies and procedures, PI activities, and yearly program assessment.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development or related field required.
  • Child Life Internship with completion of 480 hours of clinical experience under Certified Child Life Specialist in accredited Pediatric Hospital required.
  • Must have certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist by the Child Life Council or certification must be obtained within one year of hire.


  • One to two years experience in an outpatient child life program and hospital setting preferred.
