    the Physician Liaison is responsible for creating referent outreach plans and implementing efforts to market clinical services to physicians, physician assistants, office managers, case managers, and nurse practitioners to grow and develop referrals to the Institute. The position primarily focuses on educating medical staff on pre-specified, targeted areas of focus in order to increase referral volumes and meet the needs of referring physicians.



    1. Through in-person visits and telephonic/email follow-up, generate patient referrals from medical and clinical professionals in the DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland region, and other areas as required, to meet territory and organizational census goals.
    2. In consultation with the Manager, Marketing, develop goals, plans, and budgets to achieve desired census and revenue goals.
    3. Develop, maintain, and nurture relationships to encourage referrals to Kennedy Krieger through regular contact with physicians, health services office managers, hospital case managers, etc. Raise awareness and establish community liaisons through personalized visits to targeted primary referral sources and interested parties, and by representing the Institute in community events. Direct sales call to offices and hospitals and provide appropriate follow-up and resolve issues to improve customer relationships.
    4. Maintain, track, and report on a database of contacts regularly and by using various systems (i.e., EPIC, Rehabilitation Referral Source Tracker and Database; PCP reports from EMR system; and Monthly Revenue reports). Report on referral activity and trends to Patient Referral Advisory Group. Note referral and census trends and adjust field activities as necessary to mitigate peaks and lulls.
    5. Document and share referent comments and feedback from external constituents with appropriate Kennedy Krieger management to ensure the referent “voice” is represented within the Institute. In collaboration with the Manager of Relationship Marketing, author a monthly e-newsletter to keep contacts informed of Institute news.
    6. Organize and attend local, regional and national conferences, sponsorship, and exhibitions to share information about Kennedy Krieger programs with targeted referral sources. Make recommendations to the conference committee, taking goals and budget into consideration.
    7. Develop and implement appropriate marketing strategies and offer appropriate solutions through the use of appropriate consultative sales skills to overcome objections, recommend services, and facilitate referrals. Use market data to identify new business and potential opportunities. Collaborate with the External Relations team to create appropriate materials for distribution to stakeholders.
    8. Participate in relevant Institute meetings and contribute current and relevant market intelligence to the Patient Referral Advisory Group and other committees.
    9. Develop an in-depth knowledge of Kennedy Krieger programs, stay abreast of changes and the appropriate process for referrals. Provide insight to External Relations and/or Senior Management related to emerging business opportunities and competitive activity.
    10. Implement and document an ongoing method of profiling, monitoring, and reporting demographic, competitive and other changes in healthcare services.
    11. Provide and/or coordinate in-services and professional presentations for referral sources, community groups, and other organizations. Coordinate and conduct tours and visits for potential or current referents.
    12. Review web based referrals and intake portals quarterly to promote their use and provide feedback to Care Management Office.
    13. Manage clinical field marketing budget and submit expense reports monthly and plan for specific recurring expenses. Understand referral-related financial implications and insurance contracts.
    14. Participate in the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and Joint Commission audits and ensure standards related to sharing public information are met. Advocate for initiatives for improving processes related to referrals.



    Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Human Services, Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Nursing, Physical, Occupational or Speech Language Therapy, or related field required.



    • 3-5 years of professional experience working in healthcare to include hospitals, acute care, rehabilitation settings, home healthcare agencies, insurance companies, physician practices or related field required.
    • Must have client services and relationship management experience.
    • Must have marketing/sales experience and demonstrated history of results.
