The Aquatics and Fitness Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the coordination of matters related to the aquatics and fitness program (i.e., supervision and implementation of water and land-based activities) and maintenance of the physical pool area.


  1. Provide supplemental swim instruction, pool supervision and classroom management under the direction of the Aquatics and Fitness Coordinator.
  2. Aid in the planning and implementation of water-based and land-based activities for students in the LEAP program. Collaborate with the Aquatics and Fitness Coordinator, teachers, related services, and program administration such that activities are consistent with overall program and student goals.
  3. Maintain safe and clean environment for aquatic activities.
  4. Test pool chemical levels and maintain daily records of readings as noted in the KKI Aquatics Policies and Procedures.
  5. Oversee pool security by controlling access of students/staff during program hours.
  6. Inventory, secure, and maintain all aquatic instructional equipment, including first aid equipment for the pool area. Maintain equipment for land-based activities.
  7. Assist in safety briefings and trainings for school staff.
  8. Oversee the use of the pool and compliance with all regulations. Keep records and certifications posted and up-to-date according to Maryland and Red Cross regulations.
  9. Notify Aquatics and Fitness Coordinator or campus Facilities Manager of any conditions relating to the pool or locker rooms that may require attention.
  10. Supervise and maintain a safe environment for staff and students in the pool, locker rooms, and other recreational areas.
  11. Assist with supporting the school mission and goals in a positive and professional manner with a student-centered school culture and climate as designed by the administration as specified in school and KKI policies and procedures.
  12. Participate in and contribute to in-services in a professional and collegial manner.



Minimum of one year previous experience as a lifeguard required.

Experience with Special Education preferred.



By the end of the employee’s initial evaluation period, every individual must meet “No Child Left Behind” Legislation standards for highly qualified staff as defined as any one of the following: 

1.) possession of an AA Degree, or

2.) completion of two years of college equivalence (minimum 48 credits), or

3.)  a passing score on the state exam for highly qualified staff. 


Related Training Requirements:


  • Must possess and maintain Lifeguard and CPR Certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry students in braces and other adaptive equipment.
  • Must be able to lift/carry/restrain students as needed to implement approved behavioral management techniques.
  • Must be a proficient swimmer able to provide water rescue to others in danger.
