the Laboratory Director supervises all testing and quality assurance in a biochemical diagnostic laboratory.  The principal responsibilities include; 1) performance as needed of a variety of laboratory research and diagnostic procedures for the identification and evaluation of inborn errors of metabolism according to established laboratory procedures; 2) development of new laboratory procedures; and 3) maintenance of equipment and experimental records necessary for the conduct of the laboratory's activities and for satisfaction of state and federal certification requirements.


  1. Supervise all operations of the Kennedy Krieger Institute Biochemical Genetics Laboratory. Train and supervise the laboratory’s technicians.  Assume responsibility for evaluation and reporting of test results.
  2. Support the Peroxisomal Diseases Laboratory by participating in evaluation and reporting of test results as needed.
  3. Supervise quantitative extraction, purification, derivatization, and analysis of organic acids, fatty acids, amino acids, and other metabolites from human fluids, tissues, or cultured cells according to established laboratory procedures using the analytical techniques of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and other analytical techniques, as needed.
  4. Identify and quantify compounds by mass spectrometry and gas chromatography and provide interpretations of test results. Prepare test reports and maintain computer records of test results.
  5. Development and standardize new analytical methods including CAP-compliant validation.
  6. Utilize and maintain the laboratory's amino acid analyzers and GC/MS and LC/MS systems according to the manufacturer's or laboratory's specific procedures. Utilize, share, and maintain other standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, balances, sonicators, ovens, evaporators, and incubators. Maintain records for laboratory equipment and stocking of laboratory supplies.
  7. Follow established departmental and university policies for quality assurance, infection control, safety, and environmental protection. Keep updated safety policies for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, infectious, and radioactive substances and execute all laboratory procedures in compliance with such policies. 
  8. Perform quality assurance procedures and maintain related instrument and testing logbooks as required by state and federal laboratory licensing agencies
  9. Work as a team member of the research division of the Kennedy Krieger Institute and share in the maintenance of jointly used equipment and facilities
  10. Attend laboratory seminars, meetings, and additional training classes or seminars pertinent to the safe and accurate performance of duties in the laboratory. Undertake education or training as needed to learn or upgrade skills for new laboratory equipment, procedures, and specific job responsibilities.  Attend selected national and international scientific meetings as needed for updating knowledge of metabolic disorders and their diagnosis



  • Doctor of Philosophy in genetics, chemistry, or biochemistry



  • At least five years experience as a supervisor in a diagnostic biochemical genetics laboratory.




  • Board certification or eligibility in Biochemical Genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics.
