the Research Assistant II carries out scientific experiments planned by Dr. Kadam and colleagues in the Neuroscience Laboratory.  A considerable degree of responsibility, flexibility, and independence is required to carry out the diverse duties that are assigned.  The ability to grasp the rationale for the methods used and careful attention to details of the protocols are important for success.  Reliability and the ability to work well with multiple investigators are essential.  The Lab Tech II is able to read and understand the scientific literature, carry out experiments, assist with planning experiments, assist with analyzing data and make presentations to others about her work.  A strong background in neuroscience, molecular-biology and physiology as well as previous lab experience is required. Electrophysiology experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  1. Carry out animal protocols, including experimental treatments, surgical techniques, post-operative care, behavioral studies and euthanasia, in accordance with ACUC-approved protocols and the Guide for the Care and Use of Experimental Animals.
  2. Carry out cell culture studies, western analyses, and transfection studies.
  3. Carry out histological, receptor binding, immunohistochemical or in-situ hybridization experiments:  prepare tissue sections and process according to experimental protocols.
  4. Use methods such as immunoblotting for evaluation of protein expression or Northern blotting, RT-PCR and gene array technology to measure mRNA expression in tissue samples.
  5. Assist with in-vivo EEG and in-vitro slice electrophysiology experiments and data analyses
  6. Use computerized image analysis systems to collect data from the experiments; analyze data with Microsoft Excel and statistics packages such as SPSS or Statview.
  7. Assist with the design and planning of experiments, using above/other methods.
  8. Implement new experimental protocols, based on methods described in scientific literature.
  9. Work cooperatively with others to carry out collaborative research with co-investigators.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of scientific terminology required.
  • Previous laboratory training is required.

 

EDUCATION:

  • BA/BS in biology, neuroscience, molecular biology or a related science is required.
  • Course work in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology is required. 
  • Masters in neuroscience, biology, molecular biology or a related science is preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum two years’ experience in laboratory research required.
  • Experience with molecular biology, histological and histochemical techniques is strongly preferred.
