the Social Media Specialist will work collaboratively with the Marketing, Communications and Public Relations team to create, monitor and support social media campaigns and programs. The incumbent will drive community engagement by updating, maintain, creating, and expanding existing social media content.



  1. Understand social media platforms/channels and identify emerging opportunities.
  2. Build and execute social media strategy through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification that’s in keeping with, and support of, the Institute’s overall communications objectives.
  3. Work with the Public Relations Manager and other external relations teams, to plan, curate, create, edit, revise, publish and share daily content to include original text, images, video, HTML, etc. that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action and engage with the Institute.
  4. Work with Public Relations Manager to respond to issues that may arise in public-facing channels in a timely manner.
  5. Create, optimize and maintain Institute pages within various social media platforms to increase the visibility and perception of the Institute daily and/or as required.
  6. Monitor, moderate and respond appropriately to user-generated content.
  7. Create editorial calendars and provide Institute event content to various online calendars.
  8. Continuously improve by capturing and analyzing the appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices, and then acting on the information.
  9. Research, analyze data, assess, test, recommend adjustments, present and prepare reports.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, computer science, public relations, journalism, news media, marketing, English, fine arts, or other related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in related field is preferred.



  • 2 - 3 years of professional experience guiding social media campaigns and programs to include relevant experience across key social media platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, blogs, etc. Experience using social media to drive non-profit and philanthropy/giving strategies preferred.
  • Experience working in academic, healthcare, non-profit or research organizations, or with individuals with disabilities, is preferred.
