Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Child Life and Therapeutic Recreation Department is seeking a highly motivated Child Life Specialist.  This person will provide psychosocial care for patients in the inpatient and outpatient playroom programs.  This position is primarily in the playroom with some opportunity to provide child life services on a rehabilitation unit.  Specialist will facilitate therapeutic activities in playroom setting which foster play, self- expression, mastery and coping of the healthcare environment. 

 

Position requires a strong knowledge on normal growth and development as well as some experience working with children with developmental challenges.

 

The Child Life Specialist will be part of a diverse Child Life and Therapeutic Recreation Department and collaborative interdisciplinary team. 

 

 

Responsibilities

  1. Supervises patients and siblings in the outpatient playroom.
  2. Plans and facilitates activities and interventions in group and individual settings to help patients and caregivers cope with medical situations and meet their developmental, emotional and cultural needs.
  3. Observes and assesses patients, siblings and caregiver/patient interactions and provides information when appropriate to clinicians.
  4. Models developmentally appropriate interactions for patients, caregivers and staff.
  5. Facilitates the orientation, adjustment, and ongoing support of patients and caregivers to the health care experiences, illness or disability and advocates for them within the medical environment.
  6. Provides medical procedure preparation, support, and accompaniment whenever necessary to support the patient and/or caregivers.
  7. Communicates and documents patient and caregiver interventions as appropriate.
  8. Maintains a safe, therapeutic milieu in all patient areas and sustains appropriate professional boundaries with patients, caregivers and staff.
  9. Provides supervision for child life students and volunteers.
  10. Interprets the mission, goals and philosophical base of the department, professional group, and/orInstitute whenever necessary.
  1. Maintains quality and effectiveness of patient services through implementation of and compliance with all departmental and/or Institute policies and procedures, PI activities, and yearly program assessment.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development or related field required.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • One to two years experience in an outpatient child life program and hospital setting preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Child Life Internship with completion of 480 hours of clinical experience under Certified Child Life Specialist in accredited Pediatric Hospital required.
  • Must have certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist by the Child Life Council or certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
